Kathryn Curtis

2005-2006 School Year
Alone
I stood alone. Washed up onto the shores of an unknown land I stood alone. The wind blew through my hair wrapping it carelessly around my pale face, I stood alone. The waves crashed onto the banks of the gray, cold rocks where the world had dumped me once more. “Why does this happen?” I thought to myself. “Why does something get ripped away from me or why do I get ripped from it?” “Why am I always alone?” Alone, that’s what I would always be, alone. Never will I be able to love or to mourn, I will always be alone.

Walking slowly into the land where my fate lay I pondered these questions. As I walked, the sky only seemed to get darker and the land grayer. No other life had passed me or flew by me, I was alone. I knew where I was now. I was where the sun never shone, where the grass never grew, I was alone. The plain, gray moor encircled me, mocking me knowing what I would always be, alone. Then I saw a light dimly shining its way through the moor, I heard a calling. It was a calling, for me. I followed it walking swiftly through these no longer deserted plains. “Maybe I wasn’t alone.” I thought. “Maybe I was where I belonged, with someone.” I walked and walked but the light never stopped moving. Eventually the light went out and there I was, alone.

In case you wondered...
I took that piece,
From your backpack.

You most likely want to know where it went,
I saw you sit for a long time and lament.

I am very sorry, as you can see.
But it looked so good that I kept it for me.

Mrs. Frazer's Chair
We stole your rocking chair,
From your room.

It was all in good fun,
You would get it back soon!

We wrote fake notes,
That left no trace of prints.

We said we were sorry,
But while we laughed and smiled, it gave you some hints.
We were not sorry at all, the joke was the best!

Little Brothers
They scream and shout when they do not get there way,
Are you sure you do not want to buy him from me today?
They throw things, and invade your room.
They bring over their friends and read your diary too!
But I will sell him real cheap, 50 cents good enough?
Do they do anything good you ask? Well….

They take care of you when you are sick,
And my brother is someone to hangout with when no one is free.
He makes you laugh with his jokes; he copies you when he thinks you are not looking.
They say he admires you, I guess in some way it is true.
Sometimes he will say, “I want to be just like you!”
Forget it I say, I keeping him now.
Little brothers are the best I notice it now!

Just Before
Jesenia:
I stare at the clock, two minutes left,
In my uniform I begin to sweat.
One mistake that is all it takes
But hey I have done this several times before
It is no big deal; stop fooling around it is time to soar.

I turn around and begin to call out,
Instructions to line up.
But wait, there is the band walking down,
Why can’t they do that whenever I am around?

Nick:
Walking down the bleachers to get set up,
I look at my fellow Drum Major’s face and laughed.
Quickly and quietly I walked onto the track,
And headed to my spot at the head of the pack.

Jesenia joins me; I smile at her she smiles back,
The rest of the band lines up ready to go,
It is time to perform our halftime show.
Silently we walked, with some laughs in-between,
We get to our spots and go “down to the ready.”

Jesenia:
I looked at Nick, he gave me a nod.
I raised my arm, in my hand shown a whistle.
I blew the command; long, short, long, short, short, and long.
We snapped to attention screams of “HUT” piercing the air.
I blew another command and we start to march on to the field for the show.

Our sections break to set up in formations,
But Nick and I keep marching to get to our stations.
We look at each other and give a nod,
We both silently count to three and….

Nick:
Up go our sticks into the air,
Spinning in a circle they come down.
We catch them and thrust them into the ground.
On bended knee we sink down and salute, I grab my saxophone and get to my spot.
Jesenia jumps onto the platform and waits.

Jesenia:
I raise my hands and begin to conduct
The show is going great, thanks to talent and luck.
I flash through the first song and start the next,
Now comes the part the sounds the best.

Nick:
I start my solo, confident but not cocky.
My hands move slowly, the music comes out.
Then the end of solo comes and everyone joins back in,
Woodwinds, brass, trumpets, and drums.
The song ends, now it is my turn to conduct.

I raise my hands, and off we go
“Disney’s Magical Marches” is heard throughout the night,
We are finally in step; I roll my eyes it is about time we got that right.
The song is finished, I sigh in relief,
I step off the podium and start to march out.

Both:
The show went great, it was not a bore.
So why were we nervous in the beginning?
Something could have gone wrong, we guess.
But nervous is something we are just before….
